ঊনবিংশ শতাব্দীর শেষ দিকে টাঙ্গাইল তাঁত শিল্পের ব্যাপ্তি পপ্রসারিত হয়। টাঙ্গাইল শাড়ির তাঁতিরা মূলত ঐতিহ্যবাহী মসলিন তাঁতশিল্পীদের বংশধর। তাদের আদি নিবাস ছিল ঢাকা জেলার ধামরাই ও চৌহাট্টায়। তারা দেলদুয়ার, সন্তোষ ও ঘ্রিন্দা এলাকার জমিদারদের আমন্ত্রনে টাঙ্গাইল যায় এবং পরবর্তিতে সেখানে বসবাস শুরু করে। শুরুতে তারা নকশাবিহীন কাপড় তৈরী করত। ১৯০৬ সালে মহাত্মা গান্ধী স্বদেশী আন্দোলনের ডাক দেন। এই আন্দোলনের লক্ষ্য ছিল ইংল্যান্ডের ল্যাঞ্চাশায়ারের তৈরী কাপড় বর্জন করা। এই সময়ে তৎকালীন পূর্ব বাংলা (বর্তমান বাংলাদেশ) এর তাঁত শিল্পের প্রসার লাভ করে। ১৯২৩-২৪ সালে তাঁতের কাপড়ে নকশা প্রবর্তন করা হয়। ১৯৩১-৩২ সালে শাড়ি তৈরীর জন্য জাকুয়ার্ড তাঁত প্রবর্তন করা হয়।
